Buy Vintage Postcards and Sell The Originals and Public Domain Reproductions on eBay

Postcards are among the most popular of collectibles worldwide and can be purchased inexpensively and sold at high profit margins on eBay.  Most people know that already, but what they may not know is that postcards attracting high prices and multiple bidders on eBay can also be turned into highly priced hot selling reproduction items.

The reason is that many people admiring your postcards on eBay are not particularly interested in owning those postcards.  Some would be happy to buy a reprint of the image as a decorative piece, for example, or for research or just as a keepsake of some place or event depicted on the postcard.

From my point of view, as a seller of topographical postcards, namely those depicting views of specific places, I am often asked for copies of collectable postcards featuring places the enquirer  has been or where they were born or married, sometimes because their ancestors lived in those locations.

And many of those people can’t afford or see no reason to buy postcards themselves which on eBay can fetch anything from ten or twenty dollars to several hundred dollars or more.

All of which means, if  those postcards are in the public domain, and no longer subject to copyright laws, then there’s a good living to be earned by copying those images and selling them as prints or calendars, on greetings cards or in eBooks, and numerous other formats besides. 

In time items derived from those old postcards will earn the seller more money than the original postcards fetched on eBay and definitely much more than those items cost the seller at boot sale or flea market.

So next time you see postcards for sale, don’t worry too much about the asking price, just consider whether it’s a mere postcard you’ll be selling on eBay or a stack of back-end products from one low price original.
